Walk into any mobile shop in Cairo, Alex, Mansoura or Riyadh and you'll hear the same conversation five times an hour: "Which screen protector is better — hydrogel or glass?" Most shoppers genuinely don't know the difference. Most shop owners give a quick answer based on what they want to sell that day. And most YouTube reviews are sponsored. So let's fix that — properly.
This is the honest guide we wish every customer (and every new technician) would read before they argue at the counter. By the end, you'll know exactly which protector to recommend for which customer, what each one really costs you to produce, and how to stop losing sales by saying the wrong thing.
What is a hydrogel screen protector?
Hydrogel is a flexible, ultra-thin TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) film coated with a self-healing polymer layer. The film is soft, stretchable, and only about 0.15–0.20 mm thick. The "hydrogel" name comes from the gel-like elasticity, not from water. When you press a fingernail into it, the film bends, then springs back. Light scratches close themselves within minutes because the polymer remembers its shape. That's the famous "self-healing" property.

What is a tempered glass screen protector?
Tempered glass is exactly what it sounds like: a thin sheet of real glass (0.26–0.33 mm typical) that has been chemically or thermally treated so its surface holds high compressive stress. When something hits it, the stress absorbs the impact and the glass shatters in a controlled way instead of cracking through to your phone.
It feels exactly like the original screen — same hardness (9H on Mohs scale), same tap response, same coldness under your finger. The downside is that it's rigid: it can't conform to curved edges. Either you accept a 2D flat protector that leaves the curve exposed, or you go to a 3D edge-glued version that needs UV curing and is fiddly to install.
How each one is made
Tempered glass comes pre-cut from the factory in fixed phone sizes. You buy boxes of 50, 100, or 200 per model. Stock risk is real: when a new phone launches, your old SKUs become dead inventory.
Hydrogel is the opposite. You buy blank A4 or roll sheets, you keep maybe 5–10 SKUs of raw film (matte, glossy, privacy, anti-blue, ceramic-finish), and you cut on demand. - Touch sensitivity: Both are excellent on modern phones. Hydrogel feels slightly grippier; glass feels glassier.

Self-healing: real or marketing?
Real, but limited. Hydrogel heals scratches up to about 100 microns deep. That covers 95% of the daily wear customers complain about: sand, fingernails, denim pocket abrasion. It does not heal cuts, gouges, or sharp impacts. Glass doesn't heal at all — but it also doesn't scratch as easily in the first place.

Install difficulty (your actual labor cost)
Glass is faster on flat phones — 60 seconds, peel and drop, push the bubbles out. But on curved phones it gets messy: dust, edge lift, that grey halo around the edge.
Hydrogel takes longer to learn (2–3 minutes per unit when trained) but the result on a curved phone is night-and-day better. With a UV machine, the alignment jig does most of the work.
If you have a busy shop, train one technician on hydrogel as a specialty and let the others handle glass. Customers will pay extra for the hydrogel install precisely because it's harder.
